The Principal York is the perfect and award-winning wedding venue in York, indeed, couples have been celebrating their wedding nuptials – and more recently tying the knot itself – for generations.
Stunning Victorian architecture, three acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, and views out to the York Minster makes us a perfect setting for your wedding day in York.
The hotel boasts a beautiful array of spaces, including banqueting rooms licensed for your civil ceremony, an outdoor terrace for a Champagne reception and private dining rooms that seat from 30 to 250 guests.
Your dedicated wedding planner will help you realise your vision for the day, recommending the best photographers, florists and entertainment providers and liaising with them on your behalf, as well as working with our chefs to create your perfect menu. Your big day will be elegant, glamorous and perfectly delivered.

Oak room
A sense of occasion on a grand scale
In the early years of the last century, a new wing was added to the original hotel building. Known as the Klondyke Wing – because it opened in the same year as the famous gold rush – it boasts some of the grandest most beautifully crafted rooms in the entire hotel. Chief among these is the Oak room, which combines oak panels and decorative carvings with double-height sash windows and sweeping views of the hotel gardens and Minster.
Couples can exchange vows in the Oak room, which is licensed for ceremonies for up to 160; or raise a toast and tuck into a definitively romantic wedding breakfast for up to 100 people.
Crown & Wedgewood rooms
A charming mix of old and new
Sitting on the first floor of the hotel, and immediately above the Oak room, the Crown and Wedgewood rooms are elegant interiors that provide a neutral yet sophisticated ‘canvas’ in which to bring your wedding to life. Originally built for the great and the good of York to hold business and board meetings. The Crown is panelled and elegant, while the adjoining Wedgewood has ornate plaster decorations in an Adams style. Both will comfortably hold 80 people for a wedding ceremony or 50 for wedding breakfasts.
